Watch Rules
Watch rules let you set a threshold on a metric and get notified when the metric reaches it. You can spot changes without checking your dashboards every day.
Metrics you can monitor
Section titled “Metrics you can monitor”The monitoring target is a view for Search Analytics and User Analytics, and a job for Index Worker. Choosing All view monitors the metrics for the whole project.
| Feature | Target | Metrics |
|---|---|---|
| Search Analytics | View | Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Average position |
| User Analytics | View | Sessions, Conversions, Conversion rate |
| Index Worker | Job | Crawled rate, Indexed rate |
Building a condition
Section titled “Building a condition”A rule is made of an evaluation method, a condition, and a threshold.
| Evaluation method | What it compares |
|---|---|
| Compare the latest available value with the threshold | Compares the latest available value itself |
| Percentage change from the previous day | Compares the percentage change from the previous day’s value |
| Percentage change from 7 days earlier | Compares the percentage change from the value 7 days earlier |
| Percentage change from the same day of the previous month | Compares the percentage change from the same day of the previous month |
A condition can be set as a threshold or a change rate — for example “when clicks fall below 10,000”, “when increased by 10% or more”, or “when decreased by 10% or more”. For rate metrics such as CTR or crawled rate, both approaches are available: set a threshold directly (e.g. “when CTR is 8% or lower”) or watch a change rate (e.g. “when crawled rate drops by 20% or more”). Currently only single-day comparisons are supported.
The Watch condition at the bottom of the form previews the condition you have selected as a sentence.
Adding a watch rule
Section titled “Adding a watch rule”Search Analytics / User Analytics
Section titled “Search Analytics / User Analytics”- Open the Watch rules section in the target project’s Project settings.
- Choose Add watch rule, then set the target view, metric to monitor, evaluation method, condition, and threshold, and save.
You can also add a rule from each view’s menu or from a metric card’s menu on the dashboard. In that case, the target and metric are filled in for you.
Index Worker
Section titled “Index Worker”Add a watch rule from a job’s list or detail page. A job cannot be selected while it is running or when its latest completed job has no crawl or index results. Rules you create are listed in the Watch rules section of the project settings.
Suggest a condition from recent data
Section titled “Suggest a condition from recent data”Choose Suggest condition from recent data in the create/edit form to fill in a suggested metric, evaluation method, and threshold based on recent data, along with Why this suggestion explaining the basis. Review the suggestion, adjust it if needed, and then save. Getting a suggestion does not save the rule.
No suggestion appears when there is not enough historical data, or when every evaluable metric already has a rule. In that case, you can still set a condition manually.
How notifications arrive
Section titled “How notifications arrive”- Rules are evaluated once a day. Evaluation uses the most recent day for which data is available. Search Analytics and User Analytics data can arrive a few days late, so the date a notification refers to may lag behind.
- The same day is never evaluated twice, and a notification is sent only when the condition changes from not met to met. While the condition stays met, no further notifications are sent until it clears and is breached again.
- Notifications are delivered to the inbox of every member of the organization with the Middle severity. If you have email notifications turned on in Notification Settings, they are also sent by email.
- A notification includes the target name, the current value, the condition, and the evaluated date, with a link to the target’s details.
Managing rules
Section titled “Managing rules”From the Watch rules section of the project settings, you can list, edit, enable/disable, and delete rules. Disabled rules are not evaluated, and deletion cannot be undone. Changing the target, metric, or condition resets the evaluation state, so the rule is evaluated again under the new settings.
Creating, editing, and deleting rules requires an Editor role or higher.
You can also manage rules by asking Amethyst AI in the browser, from AI tools connected via MCP, or with the watch-rules command in Amethyst CLI.
